Est in 1998 following the teams successful double, this exciting new method of learning is now coming to Gloucestershire from October 2005.
The Arsenal DoubleClub is an innovative education and football programme which offers a range of subjects including literacy, numeracy, ICT and French, together with football coaching.
The programmes run in schools as after school clubs or during lesson time. Double Clubs are also being used in holiday programmes and in alternative education schemes.
The prestige of Arsenal Football Club and the popularity of playing football is the inspiration behind the Arsenal Double Club. The aim is to raise the confidence and ability levels in literacy, numeracy and ICT, through teaching material about Arsenal and football. French is the latest module to be introduced. These sessions are combined with a parallel programme of football coaching.
Older pupils assist in the running of the Double Clubs. Sixth formers (and in some cases year tens and elevens) go into the local primary schools or help in year seven Double Clubs in their own school. These volunteers are essential to the success of the programme and are required to complete a training course.
The Literacy programme consists of a 24 week course that uses worksheets, resources and literacy games. All the material is based on Arsenal Football Club and is designed to improve reading, writing and self-expression. Video and audio resources are also used. The programme meets many of the objectives of The National Literacy Strategy.
Following the popularity of the literacy programme, a numeracy module has been introduced. It consists of worksheets and numeracy games based around Arsenal and football generally, with each six week block of work centred around a particular area of the game. The activities in each session will address the key objectives outlined in Years 4, 5 and 6 of The National Numeracy Strategy.
The Information and Communication Double Club uses computers and technology to raise levels of ICT skills, literacy, numeracy and study skills. The programme is largely inspired by football.
The football programme is based on Arsenal Football Club's successful Soccer School programme. Each session consists of a warm-up, the development of a skill and small sided games. The course should lead to a significant improvement in the fitness and football skills of all pupils.
In January 2004, Arsenal's Community Department began a Department of Education & Skills backed pilot in which an Arsenal "tracksuited" member of staff is placed in four secondary schools to implement a Double Club and specialist football programme during school-time on a full time basis.
Selected groups of pupils are receiving a concentrated Double Club Key Stage 3 curriculum, to see whether an intensive approach, with a different style and content, will produce desired results. Initial indications are very positive and it is hoped that this programme will be expanded to other schools.
